WHAT WE DO?
St Clements Joinery undertake all aspects of woodwork, from structural through to joinery and finish carpentry. Our strength lies in combining form and function, designing and making items and spaces tailored to each client’s particular tastes and needs.
Each project is a collaborative process with the client, architects, interior designers and/or any other trades involved. Through initial concepts, design process, manufacture in our workshop in Harberton and finally installation, we pride ourselves on our adaptability and experience in finding solutions to achieve the desired outcome.
-
Design work is primarily client led, starting with what is needed functionally, closely followed by stylistic decisions. Once a brief has been worked out a site survey is taken and used to generate a 3D model of the space and initial drawings of the items to be made. With a design settled upon, a highly accurate 3D model is then created along with more detailed 2D drawings which are used for production. Input from our side tends to be of a more technical nature, such as types of timber, construction method and what finishes are available and most suited for the particular project.
-
The vast majority of projects are made in our workshop in Harberton near Totnes, from processing of sawn timbers through to the fine finishing. In terms of craftsmanship and construction, we utilise a range of approaches, from more traditional joinery and carpentry techniques to more modern and often unique approaches. The approach to making is primarily dictated by the style of the work but the nature of the way it is to be installed is often a major factor.
Smaller items like freestanding furniture, doors and windows tend to be made to completion in the workshop. Larger projects like staircases or kitchens are partially constructed in the workshop and taken in kit form to site for installation.
-
Depending on the project, around half of our work is undertaken on site. Laying timber and engineered flooring for instance are purely site based activities. We have many years of experience installing staircases and built in furniture on site. The vast majority of our installation work is with items we have designed and made, this allows a much greater efficiency, often having constructed things specifically with the installation in mind.
We have also installed items manufactured elsewhere and then contributed complimentary bespoke elements, such as balustrading and handrails for a pre-fabricated staircase.
